The Importance of Literacy Based Therapy

Our mission at Seagull Speech is to use evidence-based therapy; it is the expectation of all speech-language pathologists to provide our students and clients with therapy that is backed by research to ensure optimal progress.

One evidence-based therapy is using literature when providing intervention. Multiple studies show that literacy-based therapy improves all aspects of articulation and language-expression, comprehension, vocabulary, making inferences, grammar, and narratives (story telling). And not only that, it helps students generalize their skills better to the classroom.

Our SLPs use specific therapeutic measures during intervention. This includes repeating the opportunities to practice their specific targets, intensely delivered intervention and targets, providing systematic support and working on explicit skill targets. It is with these measures that the SLP can practice his/her craft and do so much more than just read with the student!

Our teletherapist SLPs utilize a number of resources to read books and stories with our students/clients online. From YouTube videos of read aloud stories, to educational sites that provide stories and online books for all ages. Supplementary materials may include related worksheets, Google slides with custom practice targets, graphic organizers for story retell, or even the white board to type or draw responses. The materials and resources are limitless which make literacy-based therapy a fun way to help students and clients practice their goals without boredom!
